Along the way, we will explore the rich history, notable buildings, and local attractions of each town. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

Starting in Massachusetts and Driving Along the Rhode Island Coast

We begin our adventure in Massachusetts, right next to the Rhode Island border. As we cross over into Rhode Island, we are greeted by the breathtaking coastline that stretches before us. Our first stop is the town of Bristol, a place filled with history and charm.

Visiting the City of Bristol

Bristol is a town that is packed with history and notable buildings. From the stunning Bristol County Courthouse to the historic First Baptist Church, there is so much to see and explore. We could spend hours, even days, discovering all that Bristol has to offer.

One significant part of Bristol’s history is the DeWolf family. While they were known for their involvement in the slave trade, it is important to acknowledge their presence and influence in shaping the town’s history. The patriarch of the DeWolf family, James DeWolf, was one of the wealthiest individuals in the United States due to the profits generated from the slave trade.

Visiting the City of Newport

Next on our itinerary is the city of Newport, one of the oldest cities in the country. As we explore downtown Newport, we are captivated by the abundance of shops, restaurants, and cafes lining the streets. The city has a vibrant atmosphere, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the lively atmosphere.

Newport boasts a median household income of $77,000 per year and low poverty rates, making it an affluent city. One of the notable buildings in Newport is City Hall, which underwent renovations and is now listed on the national register. This historic structure serves as a symbol of the city’s commitment to preserving its heritage.

For history enthusiasts, Newport is a treasure trove of attractions. From the oldest operating tavern in the United States, the White Horse Tavern, to the world’s oldest Methodist Church, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, there are countless landmarks to visit.

As we wander through Newport’s narrow streets, we can’t help but admire the high median home value of $530,000. The city’s allure goes beyond its historical significance, as it is home to prestigious institutions such as the Naval War College and the Naval Undersea Warfare College. Additionally, Newport served as a summer retreat for former presidents, including Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy.

Visiting the Town of Westerly

Our final destination along the Rhode Island coastline is the town of Westerly, located in the southwest corner of the state. With a population of 23,400, Westerly offers a peaceful and picturesque setting for residents and visitors.

Westerly stands out for its low crime rate, low poverty rate, and thriving tourism industry. The median household income in Westerly is $79,600 per year, and the median home value is $327,000, reflecting the town’s prosperity.

Downtown Westerly is a charming area that showcases the town’s history and character. The Westerly Library, a memorial to Civil War soldiers, and the historic buildings that dot the streets are worth exploring.

Westerly’s location on the Rhode Island-Connecticut border is unique, with the Hockatuck River serving as the boundary between the two states. This location adds to the town’s charm and natural beauty.

Exploring the Home of Dr. Joshua Babcock in Westerly

One intriguing aspect of Westerly is the home of Dr. Joshua Babcock, a close friend of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Located on Summer Street, just a couple of blocks off downtown, this historical house holds significant historical significance.

While the home offers tours, unfortunately, it is currently closed. However, we couldn’t help but wonder about the price of such a historically significant house, considering the high median home values in Westerly. With its coastal location and surrounded by big, beautiful, and very old houses on a residential street, this home is a true gem.

Due to the crowd in the area, we decide not to explore further and instead plan to continue our journey with Nicole and explore more things in Massachusetts.

Conclusion

The Rhode Island coastline has a wealth of beauty, history, and charm. From the quaint town of Bristol, with its rich history and notable buildings, to the vibrant city of Newport, with its abundance of shops, restaurants, and historical landmarks, and finally to the peaceful town of Westerly, with its low crime rate and picturesque setting, our road trip along the Rhode Island coastline has been a memorable one.
