Exploring Rural Towns in Tennessee with Joe & Nic’s Road Trip
Welcome to Joe & Nic’s Road Trip! In this video, we take you on a journey through some charming rural towns in Tennessee. We’ll be visiting Cowan, Winchester, and the ever-significant Lynchburg, known for its whiskey heritage. So buckle up and join us as we uncover the hidden gems of these small towns.
Cowan: Historical Role in the Railroad Industry
Our first stop is Cowan, a town with a rich history in the railroad industry. Founded as an important rail town, Cowan played a vital role in the transportation of goods and people. To this day, they continue to assist trains in ascending the Cumberland Plateau by providing push engines. As we explore the town, we encounter an old train depot, which unfortunately appears to be closed. Nonetheless, the sight of the trains and the surrounding area gives us a glimpse into the town’s fascinating past.
Cowan has a population of under 1800 residents and a median age of 38. The gender breakdown is almost even, with males making up 51% and females 49%. The racial composition of the town is primarily white, at 84%, with African Americans comprising 9%, Hispanics 1%, and mixed race individuals 6%. The small downtown area exudes a sense of community, and we take a drive through the streets, admiring the local establishments.
Winchester: Downtown Area and Courthouse Buildings
Next up, we make our way to Winchester, another rural gem in Tennessee. The downtown area of Winchester is a sight to behold, with beautiful architecture and historic buildings. One notable structure is the courthouse, built in 1937 and showcasing PWA modern architecture with Art Deco influences. The clock on top adds a touch of elegance to the building. As we wander through the streets, we come across the Oldham Theater, which is still screening movies, including the newest releases.
Winchester has a slightly larger population than Cowan, and its median age is similar at 38. The breakdown of genders is almost equal, with males at 50.9% and females at 49.1%. The majority of the population is white, at 85%, followed by African Americans at 11%, Hispanics at 1%, and mixed race individuals at 3%. While the town boasts relatively good income levels, it’s important to note that the crime rate is higher than the U.S. average. However, we have a wonderful time exploring the vibrant downtown area and appreciating the local artwork, although some graffiti leaves us a bit confused.
Lynchburg: Jack Daniel’s Whiskey and Distillery Tour
And now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for – Lynchburg, the whiskey lover’s paradise. Lynchburg is not only a small town with a population of around 6,500, but it’s also the home of Jack Daniel’s Distillery, one of the most renowned names in the whiskey industry. The town covers the entire Moore County, making it a significant destination for whiskey enthusiasts from around the world.
Our first stop in Lynchburg is the Moore County Courthouse, a historic building that adds to the town’s charm. From there, we explore the local shops, including Lynchburg Hardware and General Store, where Joe’s wife can’t resist buying a t-shirt. The downtown area is adorned with stunning wood carvings and artwork, creating an ambiance unique to Lynchburg.
Finally, it’s time for the highlight of our visit – the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. We learn about the fascinating history of Jack Daniel and his unlikely partnership with Nathan Nearest Green, an enslaved man who taught him the art of whiskey making. The distillery uses spring water from a cave to make their whiskey, emphasizing their commitment to quality. We get a chance to tour the assembly line and indulge in a tasting of different Jack Daniel’s whiskeys, truly immersing ourselves in the traditions and flavors of the brand.
As we conclude our visit to Lynchburg, we can’t help but appreciate the global success of Jack Daniel’s whiskey. From its humble beginnings on a farm to becoming the biggest selling whiskey in the world, it’s a testament to the craftsmanship and dedication of the distillery. We bid farewell to Lynchburg, cherishing the memories we’ve made and the whiskey we’ve enjoyed.
